Michelin Tyres develop specialist supercar tyres
Michelin Tyres is making waves in the ultra high performance (UHP) tyre market with two new super sports tyres designed in conjunction with Ferrari and Porsche and especially developed to be fitted on to high performance supercars from these leading-edge manufacturers. Michelin Tyres has a long history of association with motor sports and high performance, and has developed these exceptional tyres in record time even by the standards of Michelin Tyres.

Working with Ferrari at a number of race tracks, Michelin Tyres helped match the tyres performance with the chassis characteristics of the new Ferrari 599 GTO; Ferrari's fastest road car, with priority placed upon finding the correct balance between safety and optimal track handling. According to Michelin, the new tyres are exceptionally light, which helps to reduce unsprung weight and improve handling as well as helping to reduce fuel consumption and thus carbon emissions. Michelin Tyres also claim a 20% better rolling resistance.

Michelin Tyres has developed three different innovative rubber compounds for Ferrari: a track-type compound on the outer shoulder to withstand the extreme pressure of circuit driving, a centre of the tread compound for superior performance at very high speeds, and an inner shoulder compound that works in combination with the tyre's construction and which Michelin Tyres claim maximises the amount of rubber in contact with the road for surer road-holding.

Michelin Tyres has also launched three new ranges of tyres designed and homologated to fit the new Porsche Cayenne. According to Michelin, the "Porsche Intelligent Performance" strategy of manufacturing vehicles that deliver enhanced performance whilst also consuming less fuel and are therefore more efficient and less polluting, corresponds perfectly with the Michelin Tyres strategy of designing and producing tyres that provide the most balanced performance.

The Michelin Tyres range for Porsche's new SUV is organised around three models namely; the Latitude Tour HP, the Latitude Sport and the Latitude Alpin - a winter tyre designed to deliver the necessary performance on cold roads whether dry, wet, icy or snow-covered. Michelin Tyres' Latitude Sport's tread is designed to resist deformation in order to maintain control of the contact patch at high speed, whilst the Latitude Tour HP, also from Michelin Tyres, reduces fuel consumption whilst offering the balanced performance delivered by both summer and winter tyres.
